Tutorial: My Pet
STEP 1: Let's create a background for our pet.
- Go to the lower left hand side of the screen where it says "New Backdrop" and click the first icon that says "Choose Backdrop from Library" when hovered over
- Choose any backdrop you would like your pet to be in front of
- Select "backdrop1" in the center of the page and press the x in the top right hand corner of the backdrop so the only backdrop that appears in the center is the one you chose
- Underneath the main window you will see the word Sprites. Click "Sprite1" which is a cat.
- Clicking this opens something new on the right hand side of the screen, you are now in the "Costumes" tab.
- In the upper left hand corner there is the words "New Costume:" underneath that click the first icon that says"Choose Costume from Library" when hovered over
- Choose any pet you would like
- Now get rid of "Sprite1" and "Sprite2" the same way we got rid of "backdrop1" by pressing the x on the old sprite picture in center of page
- At the top of the screen there will be three tabs: Scripts, Costumes, and Sounds.
- Click on the Scripts tab.
- Now you can drag your pet to wherever you would like in the main window on the left side of the screen .
- In the middle of the screen are the programming blocks. The top of this section is broken up into categories referred to as buttons. Each category has different blocks under them.
- Click the Events button and select the "when green flag clicked" block and drag it onto the right hand side of the screen.
- Click the Sensing button and drag the "ask what's your name? and wait" block below that.
- You can enter text into this piece, change the question to "What's your pet's name".
- Also in Sensing there is an "answer" block press the check mark next to that to make a box appear on the screen that says answer.
- Double click that box so only a blue box appears and drag it where ever you would like.
STEP 6: Let's test the program.
- Press the green flag.
- Make sure the program asks for your pet's name and displays it
- You can move these items around on your screen to make sure they are in the perfect positions
- Click the Events button and drag the "when this sprite clicked" block.
- Click the Sound button and drag the "play sound" block under the previous block.
- The "play sound" block has a drop down menu, select the record option
- In the top left hand corner of the Sounds tab it will say "New Sound:" Click the first icon that says "Choose sound from Library" when hovered over
- Select whatever sound you want your pet to make
- Click the Scripts tab
- Choose the sound you created in the drop down menu for the "play sound" block.
- Next go to the Costumes tab
- Right click your pet and select duplicate
- On the new sprite you can draw hearts around your pet or you can press the "add" button at the top of the page to add hearts from the costume library.
- Select your first sprite
- Go to the Scripts tab
- Click the Looks button and select the "switch costume to" block and drag it below "play sound"
- In the drop down menu select the costume you just drew
- Click the Control button and drag the "wait 1 secs" block below the previous piece
- You can change how long the computer waits before changing the costume back to the original, change it to "wait 2 secs"
- Click the Looks button again and drag the "switch costume to" block below the "wait 2 secs" block
- From the drop down menu select your first costume
STEP 8: Let's test your program
- Click your pet
- Make sure that it changes costume and makes a sound
- Make sure it returns to its original look
